A postmodern pilgrim takes the pulpit ...

Today, most people know Larry Updike as the host of CJOB's morning show. He's also been a rock jock, a philosophy scholar, and ... a preacher. Larry preached his last sermon in 1981, but returned to the pulpit today at Central Baptist Church. Feel free to download his message or listen online:

This Boat Won't Be Going Under.

Every story needs a story-teller and John Longhurst did a great job telling Larry's story in today's Winnipeg Free Press. Larry has also written an autobiography -- a fascinating read, but not yet published.

Mr. Updike and Pastor G

Nice to hear the Sunday mornings on line . I had the chance to talk with some in attendance that morning who found found the morning, the reluctant preacher, and the topic stimulating. I asked them why the story in the bible was couched in terms of a miracle of the calming of that deadly sea that night : saving the doubters. Most in the nearby boats went down that night insofar as we know (as did the British soldiers in Ireland going for Pizza on the very night before this sermon was given). The randomness seems so evolutionary in character; a cold hard journey. Mr Updike , you faced this reality head on letting us know the storms will befall us no matter how we try to hide.

As we hashed these ideas out last Sunday after the sermon we ended at the story of the Exodous and how Moses and those over 20 at the start of the journey (who doubted) were not allowed past the one yard line into the promised land. There was a lot of debate over what this meant about the nature of our God.

Mr. Updike your sermon and Pastor G in your essay on facing the storm rather than retreat from it , both stimulate much thought and debate in the young (and us older ones). I don't think one could ask for more on a Sunday Morning. Thanks

P.S. Exciting news in Scientific American this month about memory and nerve regeneration in the hippocampus of the brain .... but sadly I can't find my copy!!

Nothing will ever replace the old Hockey Night in Canada theme song, but I felt it was my patriotic duty to enter Hard Rubber into CBC's anthem challenge. Press the play button (above) or check out Hard Rubber being featured on Larry Updike's morning show on CJOB!

Tune into Larry's show weekday mornings from 5:30-9:00 a.m. on 680 AM or www.cjob.com.

Guitar players! Here's a free transcription of Hard Rubber.
